Web Content Management

Web surfers expect their favorite sites to be dynamic, to change often. The content must be fresh, delivered daily or close to it. Who is going to manage that content in your company? Are you going to hand everything off to the web team, if you have one? Dries Buytaert, the founder of the Drupal open source content management system, stated that he wanted to do away with the webmaster. Once a Drupal site is configured, admittedly no mean feat, contributors can upload and manage the content efficiently without assistance.

Forrester Research in Cambridge, an independent technology and market research company, reported that "Currently, enterprises interested in open source should keep an eye on two offerings — Alfresco Software and Drupal. Drupal’s proponents praise the product’s open architecture, which has facilitated the authoring of literally thousands of community-written add-on modules that provide features like blogs and community discussion forums."

As a member of the Portland Drupal Users Group, I've become increasingly impressed by the community support for the platform. The documentation needs quite a bit of improvement, but firms like Lullabot are working on that end of the deal.
